COMMUNITY NEWS

  • El Comité de Longmont, formed 45 years ago after two Latino men were fatally shot by police, supports local community members with free legal aid, translation services and citizenship classes. The nonprofit will hold a free discussion at Stewart Auditorium on Sunday from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. — executive director Lisa Moreno and auditorium manager Justin Veach will reflect on its legacy and current challenges.  Longmont Times-Call

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado members of Congress voted last week on several federal funding measures. On Sept. 19, the House passed a short-term Continuing Appropriations Act with a vote of 217—212 and a resolution honoring Charlie Kirk with 310—58 while in the Senate, Colorado lawmakers confirmed Michael Waltz as U.N. Ambassador with a vote of 47—43 and rejected another funding bill with 44—48.  Longmont Times-Call
  • Longmont is asking local professionals in fields such as archaeology, architecture, construction, cultural anthropology, cultural geography, development, history, law, planning, and real estate to volunteer for five vacancies on the Historic Preservation Commission to help preserve the city’s heritage. Applicants must be registered voters, with an application deadline of Oct. 17 — new members will start a four-year term in January.  Longmont Times-Call
  • Various roadwork projects in Longmont, Boulder, and Erie will cause temporary delays this week — Longmont’s Third Avenue lane closures are expected to end Thursday, Boulder’s 63rd Street waterline replacement will limit local access through mid-November, and Erie drivers face detours on Colo. 52 until Oct. 31 with County Line Road closed today for paving work.  Longmont Times-Call

HEALTH NEWS

  • The USDA warned that some ready-to-eat pasta meals sold at Walmart and Trader Joe’s may have been contaminated with listeria linked to a deadly outbreak from chicken fettuccine Alfredo. Consumers in Longmont who have these products should discard them and return them for a refund at Walmart—using best-by dates from Sept. 22 to Oct. 1 for Walmart and Sept. 20 to Sept. 27 for Trader Joe’s as a guide.  CBS Colorado
  • Boulder Community Health reached its $22 million Centennial Campaign goal and spent over $10 million on new cardiology equipment — massage therapy for nurses and a palliative care program to boost patient care. Grant Besser said the donations also helped fund community grants and worker education programs that are vital for the hospital's future.  Longmont Times-Call
