BUSINESS NEWS

  • Workers at Longmont Safeway locations on Ken Pratt Boulevard and 1632 Hover St. joined a strike on Thursday under United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7—making these the second and third in Boulder County to protest. The workers waved signs and urged customers to shop elsewhere as they seek better wages, health benefits and improved staffing in ongoing talks with Safeway and Albertsons.  Colorado Hometown Weekly

CRIME NEWS

  • Robin Niver, 54, was sentenced to five years in prison after she attempted to stab a police officer during a shoplifting incident in 2023—she accepted a plea deal in May and received credit for 505 days served.  Longmont Times-Call
  • On Wednesday night at 7:55 p.m., police reported that a 23-year-old lost control of his car and crashed into the north brick wall of the Cambios Torres building at 947 Main St. in Longmont—authorities arrested him without confirming any injuries.  Longmont Times-Call

CULTURE NEWS

  • Longmont residents can see the Milky Way stretch across the sky and spot the red star Antares in Scorpius at its highest point at 9 p.m. on July 20—observers are also advised to watch for meteor showers and star clusters using a telescope or by eye.  Longmont Times-Call

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Front Range Community College in Longmont is now offering a bachelor of applied science degree in integrated building design. The program—developed with industry experts—combines design, collaboration and advanced technologies to prepare students for careers in the building and construction sectors.  Longmont Times-Call
  • St. Vrain Valley school board approved the new attendance boundary for the upcoming Mead PK-8 school to ease crowding at Mead Elementary and Mead Middle School. The board made the decision during a meeting this week and it will adjust local enrollment as the school is built.  Longmont Times-Call

  • Reese Kasper from Niwot was named Track and Field Athlete of the Year after winning six state events and sweeping the 4A hurdle races this spring—her wins helped her high school team secure a sixth straight championship. She will run at Kansas State next year.  Longmont Times-Call
