COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Good Life Refuge, a farm animal sanctuary north of Longmont, held its annual gala fundraiser last month to support its nearly 70 animals including Juniper, a Yorkshire pig who overcame factory farm hardships and became the event’s ambassador. The gala raised $28,000—short of its $75,000 goal—and the funds will pay for veterinary care, medication and a year’s worth of hay as the sanctuary plans future animal ambassador programs.  Colorado Hometown Weekly

CRIME NEWS

  • Robert Duran, 60, was found dead in a ditch in Longmont on May 19 at 3:56 p.m.—he was last seen mid-September—and police said his time in the ditch is under investigation—further inquiries are referred to the Boulder County Coroner’s Office.  Longmont Times-Call
  • At 11:49 p.m. Thursday, officers investigated a hit-and-run crash at 1800 Lincoln Drive.  Longmont Times-Call

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Friday, the Boulder County Courthouse was named a National Historic Landmark to honor its role in issuing the first same-sex marriage license 50 years ago by clerk Clela Rorex — a moment marked by plaques, pride balloons and speeches from local leaders. The event also featured a proposal by Alex Hermann to her partner Addison Watts, highlighting the ongoing impact of Rorex’s actions in advancing equality.  Colorado Hometown Weekly

  • A federal judge has allowed work on Gross Dam (the dam expansion) to go on after saying that stopping it can risk harm to people and nature. Denver Water (raising the dam 131ft to nearly triple its size) said it will finish the project while the Army Corps of Engineers rewrites permits.  CBS Colorado
